These web-based ‘games’ are examples of typical chemical processes. Most chemical manufacturing plants include reactors, where feed stocks react to form useful products, and separation equipment, where the products can be recovered and purified.

These reactors and separation equipment have been modelled using a very simplified approach. This approach models the cores of the processes and allows the user to vary key inputs to see how the systems behave. The rates have been adjusted to allow a game to be completed in a few minutes; in industry, processes could last several hours.
